Small, Precise and Genuinely Useful
If you’ve ever tried cutting thick branches with loppers and thought “this is pointless”, the Stihl GTA 26 is the fix. It’s Stihl’s smallest cordless mini chainsaw, built for pruning branches up to 4cm thick, breaking down garden waste, and handling small timber jobs without dragging out a full-size saw.
It runs on the 10.8V AS 2 battery and gives up to 80 cuts per charge in 4cm branches. It’s light, easy to control one-handed, and far quicker than hand tools for repeat cuts.
This isn’t a replacement for a petrol chainsaw. It’s for detail work, quick tidy-ups, and jobs where control matters more than brute power.
Is the GTA 26 Powerful Enough?
For branches up to 4cm thick, yes — it cuts cleanly and confidently. Push it beyond that and you’re asking too much from it.
If you regularly cut thicker timber, step up to the GTA 30 or GTA 40. The GTA 26 is about convenience and control, not heavy cutting.
What Makes It Different?
- 10cm guide bar with 1/4″ PM3 chain for clean, precise cuts
- Tool-free chain replacement
- Protective hood that folds to 90° for better visibility
- Lightweight body with rubberised grip for one-handed use
- Low noise and low vibration compared to larger saws
It feels controlled rather than aggressive. That’s the point.
Who Actually Buys the GTA 26?
- Gardeners shaping trees and shrubs
- Homeowners cutting down garden waste for bins or compost
- People making kindling from small branches
- DIY users working with pallets or reclaimed timber
- Arborists needing a lightweight saw for detailed cuts
If most of your cutting is under wrist thickness, this tool makes life easier.
Available Options
- Tool only – for anyone who already has an AS 2 battery and AL 1 charger
- Full kit – includes battery, charger and chain oil
What’s in the Full Kit?
- Stihl GTA 26 Garden Pruner
- AS 2 Lithium-Ion Battery (10.8V, 28Wh)
- AL 1 Standard Charger
- 10cm Light Guide Bar
- 10cm 1/4″ PM3 Saw Chain
- 50ml STIHL Multioil Bio
Accessories Worth Adding
If you’re buying into the AS System, it makes sense to build around it.
The GTA 26 extension shaft adds reach for higher branches without climbing.
A spare AS 2 battery keeps you working without waiting to recharge.
A replacement bar and chain kit is handy once your originals wear down.
The same battery also fits tools like the HSA 26 hedge trimmer, which makes the system practical for small garden jobs.
What We Like
- Quick to grab and use
- Cuts far cleaner than hand tools
- Light enough for awkward angles
- Simple chain tensioning and changes
Limitations (So You’re Not Surprised)
- 4cm cutting limit: Not built for thick logs.
- Shorter runtime than larger systems: Fine for pruning sessions, not all-day cutting.
- AS System only: The battery doesn’t cross over into Stihl’s bigger AP range.
Used for what it’s designed for, it’s excellent. Used outside that range, it’s the wrong tool.
Looking After It
Charge the battery fully before use and keep the chain properly oiled. Check chain tension regularly and clear sawdust out after each session. Store it dry with the battery removed.
Treat it like a small chainsaw, not a toy, and it’ll last.
