Why Use a Pole Saw or Pruner?
Pole saws and pruners are designed for safe, ground-level cutting at height. They combine reach with cutting power, allowing you to prune trees, shape hedges, and remove deadwood with control and precision.
- Cut branches up to 5 metres high from the ground
- Maintain trees, hedgerows, and orchard growth safely
- Reduce risk compared to using chainsaws on ladders
- Make clean cuts that encourage healthy regrowth
Whether you're clearing storm damage, tidying overgrown shrubs, or maintaining garden trees, a pole saw offers a safer, faster alternative to traditional methods.
Types of Pole Pruners & Pole Saws
Manual Telescopic Pruners
Lightweight, affordable, and simple to use. These are ideal for occasional trimming of thinner branches. Most have a telescopic fibreglass shaft and a pull-cord cutting head or saw blade—suited for branch diameters up to around 25–30mm.
Corded Electric Pole Saws
Quiet and low maintenance, with plug-in power. Best for smaller gardens where mains access is available. Limited by cable length but good for lighter pruning jobs.
Battery Pole Saws
Cordless convenience with powerful cutting performance. Great for regular garden use—typically handling branches up to 50mm. Look for models with adjustable poles, low-vibration chains, and auto-chain oilers. Run time varies by battery size, usually 30–60 minutes per charge.
Petrol Pole Pruners
For tougher work and commercial use. Petrol models deliver higher torque and longer run time, ideal for large trees, estate work, or dense hedging. They tend to be heavier but offer maximum cutting performance and reach.
Telescopic vs Fixed Shaft
Telescopic pole saws adjust to suit your height or the job. They’re easier to store and carry. Fixed shaft models are often stronger and simpler, with fewer moving parts.
What to Consider Before You Buy
- Reach – Combine your height with the pole length. Most models give a working height of 4–5 metres.
- Branch thickness – Battery and corded pole saws cut up to 50mm. Petrol and manual tools can handle more.
- Power type – Choose electric or battery for light, clean use. Petrol is best for frequent or demanding tasks.
- Weight and handling – Longer poles are harder to balance. Check total tool weight, especially with the head fully extended.
- Storage and transport – Telescopic or split-shaft designs are easier to store in garages, vans, or sheds.
- Battery compatibility – Many cordless pole pruners use interchangeable batteries across hedge trimmers, mowers, and other tools.
Safe Use and Maintenance
- Wear gloves, goggles, ear protection, and sturdy footwear
- Keep your footing stable and work at chest level or below when possible
- Check the chain tension and oil level before each use
- Avoid working under power lines or during high winds
- Clear the area below the cut zone before starting
