Stihl GTA 26 Cordless Garden Pruner – Compact, Powerful, and Built for Precision
The Stihl GTA 26 is a one-handed cordless pruner built for fast, accurate cutting — ideal for jobs where loppers struggle and a full-size chainsaw is overkill. Whether you’re pruning trees, clearing garden waste, or breaking down timber, the GTA 26 gets it done without the weight, noise or fuel faff.
Powered by the 10.8V AS 2 battery, this tool delivers up to 80 cuts per charge on branches up to 4cm thick. It features a 10cm guide bar, a 1/4″ PM3 chain for clean cuts, and a tool-free chain replacement system. The rubberised handle keeps it comfortable in one hand, even during awkward or overhead work.
The protective hood flips to 90° for better visibility and safer angled cuts, while the low-vibration, low-noise design makes it comfortable for extended use — even in noise-sensitive areas.
Part of the STIHL AS System, the GTA 26 is also compatible with the STIHL GTA 40 if you need more power for thicker cuts.

Who Uses the Stihl GTA26 – And What For
From professional arborists to casual gardeners, the GTA 26 is popular with anyone who needs a compact, cordless saw that can handle fiddly or awkward cuts. Its size, portability, and ease of use make it a go-to tool for a surprising range of jobs.
Tree and Shrub Pruning
Gardeners and landscapers use the GTA 26 for quick, clean cuts when shaping trees, trimming back growth, or removing dead branches. It’s far faster than secateurs or loppers — and more precise than a larger chainsaw.
Working at Height or in Tight Spaces
Arborists like that the GTA26 can be holstered — using the GTA 26 holster — and used one-handed while up a tree, making it ideal for detailed cuts in branches or clearing ivy and overgrowth.
Garden Waste and Firewood Prep
Home users love it for breaking down garden cuttings into bin- or compost-sized chunks. It’s also handy for trimming branches into kindling — perfect for log burners or fire pits.
DIY and Woodworking
The tool’s fine control makes it a favourite for pallet dismantling, carpentry, and rustic wood projects. If you’re building raised beds, fencing, or a shed from reclaimed timber, the GTA 26 handles all the fiddly cuts. For added reach, consider the GTA 26 extension shaft.

- Sharp, clean cuts without splintering
- Battery runtime is solid for most light jobs

Limitations – and How to Solve Them
- 4cm cutting limit: For larger branches, consider stepping up to the STIHL GTA 40.
- Short runtime: Add a spare AS 2 battery to extend working time without waiting for a recharge.
- Battery only fits AS System tools: If you plan to expand your tool set, stick with other AS System models for full compatibility.
How to Use and Maintain the Stihl GTA 26
Step 1: Charge the Battery and Oil the Chain
Fully charge the battery using the AL 1 charger. Before each use, apply Multioil Bio to the chain — it reduces friction, prevents wear, and keeps cutting smooth.
Step 2: Start the Tool with the Safety Trigger
To activate, press the side safety button and then squeeze the main trigger. There’s no cord-pulling, no choke — just simple, instant power.
Step 3: Let the Chain Do the Work
Use light pressure and let the chain pull through the branch. Don’t force it — clean, controlled cuts are quicker and safer.
After-Use Maintenance Tips
- Chain tension: Check and adjust regularly — it should be snug but not overtight
- Cleaning: Remove sawdust and debris from the chain housing after every session
- Storage: Remove the battery and store the tool in a dry place, ideally in the carry case provided
