Stihl GTA 40 Cordless Pruner – Professional Power, Compact Control
The Stihl GTA 40 is a powerful two-handed cordless pruner designed for professional use on the ground or at height. With a 15cm bar and upgraded 21.6V battery system, it’s the next step up from the Stihl GTA 26 — ideal for arborists, landscapers, and serious DIYers who need more reach, torque, and cutting capacity.
It runs on two AS 2 batteries in parallel, delivering up to 50 minutes of runtime and up to 190 cuts on 5cm branches. The 15 cm light guide bar and 1/4″ PM3 chain give clean, smooth cuts — perfect for controlled work in trees, tight spaces, or wood construction.
Its rubberised grip, balanced design, and overload ring make it easy to handle on the ground or in the air. An onboard LED charge indicator keeps you informed, while features like side-mounted chain tensioning and automatic lubrication make daily use simple.
This is not a toy. It’s a serious tool for serious work — certified for aerial use by trained professionals.

Who Uses the Stihl GTA 40 – and Why
Professional Tree Care
Arborists use the GTA 40 for crown reduction, branch trimming, and controlled cuts while climbing. The GTA 40 holster adds quick access for hands-free climbing.
Ground-Level Shrub and Hedge Work
Gardeners and landscapers love it for fast, accurate pruning of hedges, shrubs, and overgrowth. The GTA 40 is more powerful than the GTA 26 and perfect for daily professional use.
Joinery and Timber Construction
With its higher voltage, the GTA 40 handles rough timber and construction cuts. Perfect for fencing, raised beds, or prepping wood on-site.
What We Like
- Massive upgrade in power and runtime vs GTA 26
- Two-handed control for tougher jobs
- Longer 15 cm bar for bigger cuts
- Tool-free chain oil tank and tensioning
- LED battery level display for easy monitoring
- Certified for wet weather use (IPX4)
Limitations – and Workarounds
- Requires 2 batteries: It won’t run on just one. Buy a second AS 2 battery if needed.
- Tool-only kit lacks charger: Pair with the AL 5 Dual Charger for faster turnaround.
- No hardcase included with tool-only: Consider upgrading to the full GTA 40 Set or purchasing a case separately.
