Stihl AP 20 Battery Overview
The STIHL AP20 is designed for users who want a lightweight, straightforward battery that doesn’t weigh them down. With 144 Wh of energy and weighing just 1.3 kg, it keeps your tools balanced and easy to handle, making it ideal for lighter garden jobs or detailed work where comfort matters.
All-day usability and clear charge display
This battery features a simple LED indicator that shows the charge level at a glance, so you always know when it’s time to top up. You’ll spend less time worrying about battery life and more time getting jobs done.
Works in all weather, all year round
The AP 20 is IPX4-rated, meaning it’s splash-resistant and ready to work even if the weather turns. It also performs in cold conditions, down to -20 °C, so you can keep working through winter without worrying about sudden power loss.
Consistent power with no surprises
Unlike some batteries that drop off as they run down, the AP 20 keeps a steady level of power right until it’s empty. This means your tools deliver the same performance at 100% charge as they do at 10%, making every job predictable and efficient.
Ideal for a wide range of AP System tools
The AP 20 is compatible with all STIHL AP System tools. It’s a great option for lighter work, such as trimming, hedge cutting, or sweeping. For heavier tools or longer sessions, higher-capacity batteries like the AP 30 or AP 300 S might suit better, but the AP 20 gives you a cost-effective, easy entry point into the system.
Fast charging, plenty of cycles
The AP 20 supports up to 1,200 charge cycles and works with multiple charger options. On a standard AL 101 charger, it takes around 125 minutes to reach 80% and 160 minutes for a full charge. Faster chargers like the AL 301 or AL 501 bring this time down significantly — as quick as 25 minutes to 80% with the AL 501. This flexibility helps you keep working without long delays.
Practical runtimes across the range
The AP 20 offers working times that suit most light and medium tasks. Expect around 30 minutes with a brushcutter, up to 116 minutes with hedge trimmers, and up to 770 minutes with the SGA 85 sprayer. It also powers sweepers, pole pruners, blowers, mowers, and more, making it a versatile choice for everyday garden and maintenance jobs.
If you want a lightweight, easy-to-use battery that delivers reliable power without complicating your setup, the AP 20 is a solid pick for anyone using STIHL AP System tools.
Where not to use the AP 20 battery
While the AP 20 works across the full STIHL AP System, it isn’t the best choice for tools that need high sustained power or longer runtimes. These tools can technically run on the AP 20, but they’ll operate at reduced performance and may require frequent recharges.
Not recommended for:
- Combi tools (KMA series): KMA 130 R, KMA 135 R — reduced power, limited runtime
- Leaf blowers: BGA 86, BGA 100, BGA 200, BGA 300 — shorter runtimes and lower air output
- Pole pruners: HTA 66, HTA 86, HTA 135, HTA 150, HTA 160 — reduced cutting power and runtime
- Brushcutters: FSA 130, FSA 135, FSA 200, FSA 400 — limited runtime, reduced power especially with blade attachments
- Top-handle and arborist chainsaws: MSA 161 T, MSA 190 T, MSA 220 T / TC-O — lower cutting power, shorter cuts per charge
- Lawn mowers: RMA 253, RMA 448, RMA 443, RMA 448 PV — enough runtime for small areas but lower overall performance on tougher grass
- Vacuum shredder: SHA 140 — reduced suction and shredding efficiency
- Vacuum cleaner: SEA 100 — shorter runtime and lower suction power
If you regularly use these higher-demand tools, consider moving up to the AP 200 S, AP 300 S, AP 500 S, or AR backpack batteries for better performance and longer working times.
